update january 19, 2023
Happy New Year! We've made a few changes to our guidebook to reflect recent discussions and make some changes official. Be sure to check these and other updates (including news about our BETA period and the upcoming breeding season) in our Discord announcements!
update december 14, 2022
Miasma is officially open and accepting character applications! Our community will remain closed for now, but we plan to open up invitations to other writers in a few weeks. With this decision, however, keep in mind that things here will be extremely slow plot-wise. Have patience for your fellow writers and enjoy your time with each other. Aside from that, a few other notes we'd like to address are outlined in our Discord announcements.
update july 10, 2022
Everything with Miasma is just now coming together. Stay tuned for more news updates, changes, additions, and for the rp to start!
update july 08, 2022
Work on Miasma has only recently started with the setup on a host and configuring myBB. The process may take a while but hopefully we are able to rp on these boards soon. In the meantime you are still able to write on the jcink boards. If you are stumbling upon this page, welcome! Please check out our discord.

autumn begins september 23
As the vibrant Vale basks in the glory of the impending summer, the clear, spring weather takes on a new dimension. The days grow longer, and the sun's rays intensify, casting a warm and golden glow upon the landscape. Nature is in its full bloom, with a symphony of colors painting the valley in a tapestry of beauty. The abundance of life provides inhabitants with ample hunting grounds to hone their skills and provide for their friends and family.

Rules
Community rules encompass the social aspects of our site. These should be applied when interacting with anyone on Miasma or in our Discord. Feel free to PM a staff member on-site or through Discord if you have any questions!
Registration
  1. YOU MUST BE 18 YEARS OR OLDER TO ROLEPLAY ON THIS SITE. Deceiving staff about your age will result in a ban from the community.
  2. Feel free to make an out-of-character or personal account before making any accounts for your characters! Our character switcher (accessible in UCP) allows you to link profiles, so you can link them to your out-of-character account, which should just be named whatever you want us to call you outside of roleplay.
  3. Join our Discord! This isn't required, though we will most likely be able to answer your questions much more quickly there. We also have general chatter, in-character chatter, and help/maintenance there, so if you feel comfortable joining, it's very beneficial!
  4. Before you're allowed to start roleplaying, you must make an account for your character. The name should be their first name only and with proper capitalization. Your character will not be approved until you've filled out their profile and posted a new thread in joining for them.
Out of Character
  1. Be respectful OOC. Do not use slurs, insulting language, or say anything harmful in our chatrooms. Staff will intervene if a conversation gets too heated in OOC chat.
  2. The topics portrayed on our site may be heavy. We understand that they may be upsetting to some people, and though they are allowed in-character, we ask that people handle these topics with respect OOC. Keep jokes about potentially triggering topics out of general chat areas. In the future, we may have designated chatrooms in our Discord server where players can discuss potentially triggering topics.
  3. Do not mix IC and OOC. The actions portrayed IC are not reflective of our members’ personalities or desires, so we ask that you do not make assumptions about our players based on their characters’ actions. Do not pick fights due to IC events. Similarly, do not use OOC conflicts as a reason for conflict IC.
  4. Staff reserve the right to ban anyone proving detrimental or disruptive to our community. Otherwise, we will deliver users a warning and three strikes for major rule-breaking before banning users.
  5. We encourage users to adopt a "Yes, and?" mindset. The whole point of Miasma is to encourage everyone to write their characters, well, true to character! That means that we'd like to avoid OOC disputes and user reports based on IC events. If a character did something IC to ruin your character's plans, try asking yourself, "Okay, now what?" instead of trying to keep IC events on the same trajectory as before. Here are some common examples of topics you should try to accept IC when they happen, rather than giving a user a hard time about it, or reporting it to staff:
    • The death of someone else's character
    • An illness, chronic or temporary, picked up by someone else's character
    • Someone's character not reciprocating or losing feelings for your character
    • Characters disliking your character based on personality clashes or specific traits, as stated IC
    • Plots against your character with a solid IC basis
That being said, there are some situations in which it is valid to discuss your IC concerns with another member, or report them to staff. Here are some examples:
    • Your character is conspiring against theirs, and their character is suspicious of your character for reasons which are unclear, or they seem to have foresight that they should not be able to have about incoming events (i.e., leaving their established home of two years on a whim while another pack is planning a raid on them).
    • It is unclear whether the player or character has misinterpreted an IC action from your character (i.e., something you had intended for your character to say sweetly is interpreted as a snide remark, which may or may not cause IC consequences)
    • A character does something IC which directly contradicts something else they had thought, said, or done--within reason and without justification. (i.e., A character who had been stated to hate another character is suddenly interested in him when their players discover that both of them may carry an allele for albinism.)
  6. Before reporting another user for IC events, talk to them first! This may sound stressful, but it's a great way to avoid "bad blood" and dissatisfaction between members. People are much more likely to compromise when talking directly to the other party, and taking a moment to politely ask another user to clarify their intentions IC or OOC can make a world of a difference in the tone of our rp environment. For situations in which rules are not broken but OOC plotting or mindreading is suspected, this rule is not optional. When reporting a member to the staff team, you will be asked if you have first approached the user you have a problem with!
In Character
**DISCLAIMER (and cw for many, many things): Aside from pedophilia and sexually explicit encounters between minors, there are no prohibited topics to write about on Miasma. There will be good characters and there will be bad characters. Abuse, manipulation, killing, incest, rape, kidnapping, self-harm, gore, sexually explicit scenes of all kinds, and cannibalism are just a few topics that will come up. Staff will do what we can to ensure that these topics are properly marked so that users may avoid them at their discretion. However, we aren't able to keep all aspects of these topics from leaking into your characters' lives. By registering on this site and writing with other members, you are acknowledging this and accepting it. Join this site at your own discretion.
  1. Please write posts without any flashy coding. Use of bold, italics, and plain text only in in-character posts, please! We want to keep posts looking clean, neat, and easily readable. Please do not add signatures to your posts.
  2. Miasma is a sandbox roleplay! This is the core rule for our entire game. As this is a hugely writing-based site, this means all events and plotlines must be organically developed in-character (IC). You may not discuss ideas for plots or major events out-of-character (OOC). This eliminates pressure on our users to have their characters act a certain way, or have them befall a certain fate. We allow for some small events (non-essential or minor discussions or actions) to be settled upon out-of-character, but we ask that if users question whether or not a situation can be settled out-of-character, they bring their situation to staff for a second opinion.
  3. We are a semi-realistic wolf roleplaying site. You may only roleplay wolves on Miasma, and we ask that you keep designs fairly close to what realistic wolves would look like, though we do allow some expanded fur and eye colors and behavioral differences. Read more about this in Character Design!
  4. IC actions have IC consequences. This rule applies to a few facets of roleplay on Miasma: We don't allow killing for no reason at all, but a "reason" for killing doesn't necessarily have to be something done by the character killed. It could be an in-character motive or order from higher authority, it could be a bad mood, something which occurred in a previous thread, etc. Some characters are more predisposed to violence than others. If you fear that your character may die when interacting with another, it's best to avoid their threads. However, this does not prevent that character from joining threads with your character. You must be okay with your character being injured or potentially dying at any point due to in-character events. We do not have a "consent to kill" rule. Similarly, some natural disasters or events on-site may result in death or severe injury for your character at random. Disabilities and characters in weakened states are also more likely to die in-character. More information on this can be found in the Survival Guide.
  5. Pedophilia is prohibited Characters over 1.5 years (one year six months) of age may not sexually interact with characters under 1.5 years (one year six months) of age. They may not have graphic explicit thoughts about them. Keep pedophilia completely off of our forums and do not joke about it OOC. This is to remain in good legal standing with Jcink's terms and conditions.
  6. Sex between minors must be censored. Minors have relationships. You're allowed to have your minor character in a relationship with another minor character. However, you may not write out sexually explicit acts or scenes between them. Your characters may have sex, but it must be implied in a non-erotic/non-explicit manner. If you post something too explicit regarding minors, you will be asked to edit it or staff will be forced to remove the post entirely.
  7. Minimum joining age: The minimum age for a character to join is 3 months. Characters are expected to follow our survival system if joining under the age of 1 year, or with any disabilities or illnesses which will affect their ability to provide for themselves in the wild.
  8. Please avoid proper nouns not established IC. We want Miasma to feel organic. Please avoid referring to foreign languages by their English names, do not refer to IC areas in dialogue or characters' thoughts by their subarea names, etc. Any learned names or self-proclaimed names are fine! If a pack all refers to their home as "The Waterfall," then that's acceptable for all wolves in the pack/living there to refer to it as such. In the future, we may have a space for sharing common names for the various areas of Miasma.
  9. Foreign language rules: Single words or idioms which cannot be translated directly in foreign languages are allowed, but please use them sparingly. Otherwise, if a character is speaking in a foreign language, make a note at the top of the post clarifying what language is being spoken, and italicize the words in the post which are not spoken in the common tongue.
    • Additionally, characters who learn foreign languages from other characters are expected to be shown IC as learning those languages, just as you would show them learning a skill. Both parties, the student and teacher, must state at least once IC to be participating in this exchange. This is to avoid characters learning multiple languages under dubious circumstances.
    • To know the basics, a character needs to be stated as practicing/being taught a language for a minimum of 2 posts.
    • To know the language conversationally with some difficulty, a character needs 5 posts over at least two months
    • For fluency, a character should be stated as practicing the foreign language for a minimum of 10 posts over at least 6 months.
**Rules subject to change! We're still testing what works for us.
Profiles & Graphics
Profile pictures must be real photographs of wolves which you have permission to use (royalty-free, creative commons, photos you paid to use, etc.) We don't allow art for profile pictures, though you're welcome to include art in your character's profile elsewhere! For profile pictures which require photomanipulation, we ask that the wolf does not look overly painted, and does not take place in a non-realistic setting. Fur texture should be visible, and the wolf should still look mostly like the original wolf in the photo, just with the correct changes (fur color, eye color, markings, scars, missing limbs, etc). Feel free to look around at other users' profile pictures or ask staff for help if you're unsure what can and cannot serve as an avatar!
