update december 14, 2022
Miasma is officially open and accepting character applications! Our community will remain closed for now, but we plan to open up invitations to other writers in a few weeks. With this decision, however, keep in mind that things here will be extremely slow plot-wise. Have patience for your fellow writers and enjoy your time with each other. Aside from that, a few other notes we'd like to address are outlined in our Discord announcements.

Work on Miasma has only recently started with the setup on a host and configuring myBB. The process may take a while but hopefully we are able to rp on these boards soon. In the meantime you are still able to write on the jcink boards. If you are stumbling upon this page, welcome! Please check out our discord.

With cautious steps, Abecassis ventured into the rugged terrain of the mountain, his paws deftly navigating the treacherous rocks that threatened to shift beneath him. His overall blue coat blended with the rugged landscape.

The mountain's base was a challenging playground of uneven terrain and unstable rocks, but Abecassis approached it with a mix of caution and curiosity. He had a drive from somewhere deep within to explore every nook and cranny, to uncover the secrets hidden within the rocky crevices. With each careful step, he embraced the thrill of discovering something new, undeterred by the inherent dangers that lay before him. He would simply not die today, and that was that. As he delved deeper into the mountain, his eyes were alight with mirth, seeking answers to questions only the rugged terrain could provide.

Too far. They admonished themselves, under their breath. Their voice was a breathy rendition of stone on stone rasping. She has wandered too far last night, the scent of a goat kid a thread they'd followed through their usual nighttime hunting hours and their usual territory. These slopes weren't unknown to them, not entirely. That didn't mean Ferus wanted to be here. She squinted against the midday sun, even through the clouds, with a frustrated sigh as they picked their way over the terrain. Too bright. Too far.

Too far. She muttered again, biting her tongue as a rock clattered away from a misplaced paw. It tumbled down, down, down, the sound echoing off the sloped valley between the mountain peaks, and they watched it fall and bounce off other silvery stones flatly.

Their own fault, of course. A stray kid was too tempting a meal but they should have made their willpower overrule it. Mushrooms and cave bugs and the odd salamander could have sustained them a while longer, until the goats foolishly wandered closer to the caverns hungry maws.

Abecassis stopped in his tracks, his ears pricked up and his nose twitching. He caught a whiff of something, something that didn't belong in this rugged terrain. It was a scent that was foreign to him, and yet it was familiar in a way that he couldn't quite put his paw on. He followed the scent, his steps careful and calculated, his blue coat blending with the rocky surroundings.

As he approached a cluster of rocks, he saw movement out of the corner of his eye. He turned his head, his eyes widening slightly. It was another wolf. Striking in coloration, as if she were constructed of the earth itself. He was intrigued to find another in such a desolate place.

Abecassis was nothing if not a gentleman, so he approached her with care, unsure of how she would react. As he drew closer, he noticed the faint traces of dried blood on her fur, evidence of a recent hunt.

"Greetings," he said in a low, rumbling voice. "I couldn't help but notice your presence here. May I ask what brings you to this part of the mountain?"

They were truly not paying enough attention to their nose, her attention mostly on her own musings, and her annoyance with the bright daytime sun scalding her very retinas as the light shone around Ferus.

A bit melodramatic, she thought frankly, but just this once they decided to permit a bit of indulgence in the corners of their own mind. Alas, it proved a foolish errand, as a scent and motion soon encroached on Ferus' existence and they stiffened, tail pinning to their thigh as her slate-blue gaze alit on the man approaching. He seemed bold, but most everybody was bold when compared to the cautious cave-dweller. Silently, Ferus let her skull drop, hiding her vulnerable throat from the stranger, expression cool and cold. They were exposed out here, and it made her anxious, but equally, this was not Ferus' territory in the strictest sense. Ideally, no one would decide to live here, but this was not her usual haunt that she felt inclined to protect, though her means to do so were limited; her appetite for conflict quite picky.

He seemed polite enough, not that Ferus had ever learned manners. The mannerisms of the kind of wolf who wanted not to die by foolishness or the vengeful teeth of another less temperately-minded were the mannerisms she employed. So she did not return his greeting, only eyed him up and down with a crisply calculating gaze.

His question, however, was best answered, they supposed to themselves. Wolves did tend to be a nosy sort; he'd likely follow her or take offense if they offered no reply. Neither were results Ferus found acceptable. "I sought prey." They replied simply. In the caverns, the answer may be different. There, they served many purposes. Protector and caretaker of the mysterious depths of the stone woven into the mountain; yet also a subject who sought the protection of the shadowy crevices. On occasion, they had even served a purpose as a guide to those lost in the treacherous darkness, mostly to protect the sanctuary they had found and guarded patiently in the caverns. Helpfully, Ferus added, "More of your kind likely reside in the valley." It was likely; the mountains were terribly difficult to cross and Ferus knew some wolves had wandered into the valley. Unless they'd met their ends there, this gentleman would find what Ferus imagined he sought there. Not in the lonely, winding darkness they lived and breathed.
