A breath of wind whispered through the trees, stirring the boughs of the forest so as to make their shadows dance. Amidst this tranquility, one shadow stood undisturbed by the delicate touch of the breeze, resolutely advancing through the woods with a sense of purpose. Emerald eyes drifted here and there as the distant sound of a waterfall tugged him gently onward, his thirst demanding his immediate attention.

It had been some time since he’d last found himself forced to travel such a distance, though the circumstances felt irritatingly similar.

Alastor forced a breath from his lungs as he emerged from the foliage to set his gaze at last upon the waterfall he sought. The green of his gaze narrowed to slits against the dying light of the sun in the absence of shadows left behind. Momentarily, he cast a habitual glance around his surroundings, although the sense of caution seemed absent. He didn’t care who might find him here. And yet…

A solitary, obsidian ear pitched itself forward to listen for anything that might approach as the man settled in to quench his thirst.

The last of the light trickled in through pools, gently spilling from the canopy and brightening the underused path in weakening blobs. The light was most luminous in the center, fading around the edges. She floated, warmed by the day’s ending sun hovering above her spine till the tip of her tail. Canary avoided the shadows. Her nose pointed in a dash from one sun pool to the other. As the sun melted below, ending her game, the trees shook above.

Sooner than she liked, than she wanted, in the breath of falling water, the silence broke. Screams of birds. Her doe eyes widened at the passing flock of regular birds. “AH!” She barked back impulsively, unfortunately aware enough to know her past few days, weeks, months were filled with conversations with herself, or anything with eyes to stare back at her, and truthfully, her own reflection. Which, to her knowledge, was mangled, beaten by sweat, musk, and dirt. A white coat didn’t mean she kept it that way. That’s the way she and her brothers were raised.

And by the time she had poked her two ears, slit eyes, and sly smile out of the forest’s edge, first emerging like a coy, silly, silly mask; her pink tongue lounged outside the maw, unveiled. Her brothers, all of them, and their scents had a musk. The oldest smelled like the bulging of puberty. The youngest had a foul habit of rolling in poop. Second youngest was always wet. And her? Well, just look at her.

Across the waterfall’s pool, posed as a statuesque stranger, the scent was much different. The smell of a man. A grown man. Matured! Refined! Independent!

The short grasses brushed against her wagging tail. She started, eager and polite, “Wow, isn’t summer the best season?” Directing to the warmer waters, redundantly, "Best time of the year to me.”

A voice, young and feminine, drew the man’s head upward from the water with a narrowing of his emerald gaze. He had detected the presence of others nearby, but hadn't anticipated an encounter so soon. The dull pink of his tongue swept languidly across inky lips, gathering any remaining traces of water as his eyes settled on the girl who had spoken.

Young, tattered, and dirty - she looked the very picture of a runaway teen.

”Summer has always been a bit warm for my taste,” Alastor returned evenly, casting an appraising look over the girl. It had been bold, or perhaps simply desperate, of her to engage a complete stranger in conversation like this. A fleeting curiosity about her identity crossed his mind, only to be dismissed without much consideration. He had little interest in delving into the intricacies of her personal story. Alastor only needed to know if she had the answers he sought.

”Are you a native of the area?” He questioned mildly, an ease to the tone that betrayed a casual confidence.

Without hesitation, she welcomed herself to approach, veering onto the pool’s sandside. Light paw pads trailed behind her and left remnants of her brief injury. The right-side imprint was lighter compared to the defined, crisp left-side indentations. Habits die hard. But she had no reason to worry. Her limp was subtle. The injury was healed.

Canary acted familiar, like their presence together was well-nested and fitted, understood. He was sleek and clean. Meaning, he took the time of day to comb through and smooth knots. Grooming was a bother she gave up on. So much work just to mess it up by the end of the day. He was old enough to be a family man, old enough to have it together. Or something worthwhile. In the darkness, dressed to the shadows, he seemed to glow.

In the dim water’s reflection, her gangly figure strolled. Ears flattened back before twisting around in haphazard unison. Frogs croaked. Fireflies drifted. A water spider skittered across the pond’s reflection of her, rippling the same smile.

Chirping, "What do you mean summer is too warm? You’re saying you prefer the cold?” Her first and only winter was spent sulking in a wet coat. The girl stopped at a conversational distance. “Winter is the worst by far.” Canary paused at his question before continuing like he never asked it, he seemed comfortable, “Winter has no food! One time I had to dig through so much snow to find like half a berry, HALF! That’s a whole story – Anyway, no, I’m not from here. Who is? Why? Well, you can’t be if you’re asking. Do I look like I am?” She blinked, eager for her answer, ready to keep prattiling away.

There didn’t appear to be the slightest trace of a self-preservation present within the girl.

Boldly she approached, chattering away as if no harm might befall her in this encounter. Of course, Alastor had no intentions to harm her at the moment, but she hardly knew that. His lip twitched, curled, and then settled back into a neutral expression as she finally answered his question - she was not a local.

Alastor rolled his shoulders in an easy shrug as she posed a question of her own, repressing any feelings of disappointment her answer had stirred. ”Not particularly, you have the aIr of a wanderer,” he replied pleasantly, his emerald gaze seeking hers, deliberately averting his attention from her tattered coat. In his opinion, only someone who had traveled a great distance had any real reason to look so disheveled.

It was disappointing to realize that she likely wouldn't be able to offer any useful guidance, but there remained a possibility that she had heard whispers of those he sought during her travels. ”So, my dear, what brings you to this valley?”

The man was in a world she hadn’t ventured into. Where skies filled with shady clouds hid a sun Canary couldn’t find. Directionless, she’d stay. He asked questions she didn’t know the answer to nor did she know a single reason to even ask those questions. A strange feeling pulsed through her. She blinked slowly, and then in a flutter, she arrived. Nose first, she leaned forward, sniffing at any details. When he swept his eyes to her’s, she jerked her head back, like she caught herself too curious.

When he called her a wanderer,”Yeah, right,” she joked at a level tone and kept eye contact, the trivial act of a juvenile’s challenge. What brings her to the valley? Why did she need a reason? Underneath pine trees and above hill tops, her brothers and her drifted. Now, here she was. The question gave her a visual pause. ”Whatever I can get… But, it’s Canary, not… whatever you just said.”

You’re a wanderer. How many times a day do you clean your coat?”

Alastor observed her minutely as she responded and reacted - the eye contact, the pause, and finally the intriguing response. She wanted whatever she could get… A surge of prospective opportunity pulsed through him upon hearing her words, compelling him to cast another glance at the girl. She remained dirty, disheveled, yet perhaps there was some hidden utility beneath those layers of grime.

A little smile tugged at the corners of inky lips as she gave her name and expressed her lack of familiarity with the tongue he’d spoken. ”Canary,” he mused aloud, connecting the name to the creature before him. The moniker of a songbird suited her well. ”Αγαπητέ μου” he repeated, the words flowing smoothly from his tongue. ”It’s from my native tongue.”

But Alastor wasn’t interested in explaining the details of the foreign language to the songbird, instead choosing to address her next question. How many times a day did he clean his coat? Well. He certainly devoted more time to maintaining his appearance than she did. ”Keeping myself clean isn’t a matter of vanity, but rather of impression. I want to look just as capable as know I am, not as though I am so incapacitated that I cannot maintain even my own appearance.”

He may have lost everything he had once held, but he would pick up the shattered pieces of his life and create something new, something stronger and better than before.

When he stared at her, between the quick passing seconds, Canary studied right back, like he was an unknown marking on a tree. The message left clear as day failed to be more than indiscernible scribbles. The family man, old enough to have it together. The oldest man she had run into, seen, spoken to. Canary suffered in substantial realization she had a question; she didn’t know how to ask. The expression left her instead with a pool reflecting back to her an ignorance in her youthful, brown eyes.

A look she couldn’t hide as the man continued, speaking his foreign tongue, lecturing the importance of self-image and hygiene. Canary grumbled, suddenly peckish, that she was dirty and by default incapable by this man’s standards. What she knew, the dirtiest, mangiest, could still swipe the night’s meal from you or leave with your tail’s tip. Clean meant you never got dirty, or didn’t have a reason to.

”I guess… “

For now, the wisdom the man imparted fell shallowly, not deepening into Canary’s understanding. She smiled, eyes pinched into a crescent. His large words were confusing, just like his whole presence. All elongated and formal.

”So like, five times a day?” Canary joked: smug and deflective.
