The first light of dawn cast a gentle glow over the wintry landscape, illuminating the undulating hills and rocky outcroppings that stretched across the vast expanse of Aridus Woodland. It was a quiet morning, as though the world was still recovering from the storm that swept through the valley the night before. The air was crisp and carried a fresh, invigorating scent, laced with the lingering chill of winter.

As the first rays of light filtered through the morning mist and into the warmth of the den, Mauti began to stir from her slumber.

Slowly, her eyes opened. She made an attempt to blink the drowsiness away, pausing for a moment while she gathered her senses and grounded herself in her surroundings. The thoughts and emotions of the evening before were quick to return, as well as the lingering effects of her heat. Despite Sinclair's reassuring presence, it had been a restless night, filled with desire and instincts that seemed to pull her in opposing directions. She'd felt a primal yearning for closeness, but alongside it remained her deep-rooted need for independence. Or, maybe, it was all just a mixture of different fears; of weathering a storm alone, of losing an opportunity, or, most hauntingly, of losing herself.

With a grace that matched her slender build, Mauti silently rose to her paws, careful not to disturb the sleeping form of Sinclair beside her. She glanced at him once, already missing the sensation of his warmth at her side, then made her way out of the den, slipping away like a shadow into the early morning light.

As soon as she emerged into the frosty world beyond, she paused. The reflective surface of the snow had a way of intensifying the rays of sunlight, turning them harsh and causing her to squint. She averted her eyes slightly while they adjusted to the contrast in brightness.

Then, she risked looking out at the aftermath of the storm.

Compared to how she'd left it, the landscape was transformed. The trees, no longer obscured by flurries of snow, stood as silent witnesses to the night they had endured. Collections of discarded leaves, branches, and other debris were scattered haphazardly across the blanket of fresh snow. A breeze whispered across the landscape, uplifting delicate flakes into the air, and when she exhaled, her breath rose in great plumes.

The crisp scent of morning mingled with the faint aroma of the nearby river, its path meandering through the wintry landscape. As she made her way through the snow, each step leaving an imprint in its surface, the silence was broken by the distant caw of a lone raven. The haunting cry echoed across the landscape, bringing forth a flutter of memories from the depths of her past. It was a familiar sound, one that carried both a sense of melancholy and a hint of possibility. It served as a reminder of the journeys she had undertaken and the encounters — both good and bad — that had shaped her existence. The crunch of the snow beneath her paws added a subtle rhythm to the stillness that followed, broken up by the half-frozen gurgle of the river's currents.

Reaching the water's edge, Mauti found herself captivated by the scene before her. The river flowed lazily, its waters reflecting the muted hues of the surrounding landscape. As she lowered herself onto a nearby patch of snow, her gaze fixed upon the gentle ripples that danced upon its surface.

Her thoughts were a mixture of conflicting emotions, tugging at her heart and mind. In the quiet solitude by the jagged edges of the river's banks, Mauti grappled with the choices that lay before her. Yesterday's encounter with Sinclair, the shared moments and unspoken connection, had stirred something within her. Part of her, steadfast and resilient, urged her to maintain her distance and guard her heart. But in one ear, hidden within the foggy obscurity of her heat, came the whisper of her undeniable curiosity. Of the underlying desire for his companionship and the warmth offered by his presence.

And beneath it all, the ghostly presence of the light-furred boy she had once loved lingered, casting a shadow of regret and yearning over her thoughts.

The morning held the promise of clarity and the weight of uncertainty, intertwining multiple destinies in a dance as delicate as the snowflakes that fell around her. Mauti lay silently at the river's edge, contemplating which threads of her fate would come undone in the wintry wilderness.

Sin awoke to a chill and an emptiness. Opening his eyes he realized that Mauti was gone, she wasn't just not next to him, but she wasn't in the den either. Fearing something had happened Sin sprang to his feet and darted outside. He scanned the area, now clear without the snow blowing in his eyes and he easily picked out her dark coat against the bright clean snow by the river. His tension eased immediately and he started towards her. However after a couple paces he slowed to a stop and reconsidered. She was hesitant last night, guarded. Yes she had come to him and allowed herself to take comfort and warmth by sleeping next to him, but that didn't mean she was completely easy with his presence yet. And while he was able to control himself last night, not as hard as he thought it would be, she may want space from him while she could get it while she was dealing with her heat. He would give her that space for now.

Turning and walking away, as quietly as he could with the snow crunching beneath his paws, he headed into the trees to see if he could scrounge up some breakfast for the two of them. HE slowly made his way, winding through the trees, keeping his sense open for the sound of prey. He would not be able to bring anything large down on his own, but hopefully something small made itself known. He would like to be able to at least bring food back to her as a thanks for sharing her space with him last night and sparing him from having to try and survive the storm without shelter. A soft chatter cut through his musing and he scented the air. Something was near by. Stealthily Sin made his way closer to his prey, following its scent to the edge of the trees and closer to the river again. He was out of sight of the makeshift den and Mauti, but he hadn't gone so far that his soon to be meal would go cold before he got it back.

There at the edge of the river was a fat little muskrat. His eyes locked on his pray, which thankfully had its back to him and the wind was blowing towards him. Keeping his scent from alerting the little morsel to his presence. Ever so slowly he approached, lowering himself to the ground with every inch and stopping when the muskrat would pause its chattering. Once he was in range Sin sprang at the creature. It turned to him when it heard him push off the ground, but too late. Sin was on it in and instant, his jaws locking around the creature and silencing it with a quick shake. Though he probably should have been paying closer attention, for his hind legs were right on the edge of the bank and his violent shake caused his hind foot to slip back. With a startled yelp Sin lost his footing and slipped into the shallow, albeit freezing, water. Gasping at the shock he almost lost his prize, but was able to snatch it back up before the water could carry it away. Sin lunged out of the water, back onto solid land and shook as much of the water out of his fur as possible before it started to freeze.

Happy that he was able to get at least something for Mauti to eat, Sin made his way back to the shelter, eager to show her his prize.

Lost in her own mind and caught between conflicting thoughts, Mauti hardly noticed when Sinclair slipped away, his footsteps muffled by the snow and drowned by the river's ambience. Unknown to her, Sinclair had ventured into the thicker pocket of trees, and as deep as she was in her inner reflection, she was oblivious to the quiet act of kindness that unfolded beyond her awareness. She remained with her back turned to him, slightly curled upon herself so as to keep what little warmth she had from escaping.

Inside, Mauti's heart ached with a growing sense of loss. She'd begun to realize the weight of what she had discarded, the warmth she had once known and willingly tossed aside. Images of the light-furred boy flashed through her mind, their shared moments of tenderness and joy. She couldn't deny the similarities between Sinclair and her past lover, and the doubts crept in, like icy tendrils constricting her heart.

Sinclair's presence stirred within her a blend of emotions, his quiet strength and gentle nature reminiscent of the one she'd lost. But, she couldn't help but wonder: was her attraction to him born from a genuine connection, or was it merely a reflection of her yearning for the boy who had once held her heart? Beneath the surface, she questioned the authenticity of her feelings, afraid that they were simply a longing to recapture what once was.

As time ticked away, the cold reality of her situation became apparent — she was caught between the echo of a lost love and the potential of a new bond.

And it was this conclusion that finally began to pull Mauti from her thoughts, her senses returning to the present moment. She became aware of a subtle change in the atmosphere, a shift that made her fur prickle with anticipation. With a flick of her ears, she turned her head, her gaze meeting the sight of Sinclair's return.

In that instant, a mixture of surprise and relief washed over her. Though she had been lost in her own thoughts and doubts, a part of her had— well, had missed him, despite her inclination to deny it. The conflicting emotions still lingered, but for now, she set them aside and watched as Sinclair approached.

His eyes, she noticed, sparkled with a quiet joy, and from his jaws dangled a small, dead creature.

Her curiosity grew, mingling with the pang of sudden hunger. Immediately she recognized her need for sustenance and the convenience of the muskrat Sinclair carried with him, but the walls she'd attempted to build around her heart remained intact.

She maintained her position by the river, her gaze fixed on the captured meal. Though her hunger gnawed at her, she hesitated to assume that it was intended for her. A cautious thought tugged at her mind — perhaps it was a gift for himself, a reward for a successful hunt.

A brief silence enveloped them, the weight of unspoken words hanging in the air. Mauti's gaze flickered between Sinclair's eyes and the prey he held, a silent conversation unfolding. She wanted for him to make his intentions known, to bridge the gap between them with clarity and purpose.

Sin had originally planned to take the meal back to the den for her so she could consume it there in peace. But the more he thought about it he did not know what predators would be coming out after the storm and he did not want the scent of a kill bringing right to her doorstep.
plus she would probably want to clean up after she ate anyway, so it would be better to take it to her near the river. He watched her as he approached, noting the friendliness from last night was gone and her weariness was back. His heart sank a bit, but he could not blame her.

He reached her side and gently laid the kill down by her side. He looked from it and then back to her and gave her a small smile. "For you. Thank you for last night. He turned and walked away then, intent on giving her some space and privacy for her meal. He went back to the den, but did not enter this time. She had allowed hi entrance for the night as refuge from the storm, but he did not want to assume that she would allow him to stay any longer, though he hoped she would. Her question about fate intrigued him last night and got him thinking about why he had stumbled on her during a storm and she just so happened to have somewhere to stay. They needed each other, whether they knew it or not, but he was getting the sense that something in the past was holding her back. This wasn't a normal weariness of two strangers meeting for the first time. He felt something deeper than that was the cause of her shutting herself off.

He laid down against the rock, letting the sun hit him and warm his black fur, driving off the chills that were starting to rack his body from the unintended bath he had taken while catching her meal. Even if she decided that she did not want him staying with her he had already come to the decision that he would not travel far. Not while she was in heat. Not because he wanted to try and claim her for himself, he still wasn't sure how he felt about her in that regard, but because he would feel responsible if he left her alone and another male with not so great intentions stumbled upon her. He would not assume she could not defend herself, but she was a little thing and the thought of another causing her harm in anyway send molten rage coursing through his veins. No if she asked him to leave he would, but he would stay near enough that if she were in trouble he could be by her side in an instant.

An anxious mixture of curiosity and wariness swelled within her chest as her eyes locked with Sinclair's approaching figure. However, as he gently placed the kill beside her with a small smile and word of thanks, her focus shifted. It remained steadfast on the muskrat — even as the shadow above her receded — on the way its fur clung to its body in an abstract mess, a bold reflection of how she felt on the inside.

The sight of the lifeless creature, just as easily asleep by the way no blood obscured its pelt, stirred her incessant hunger, but she knew it also held a deeper meaning. Briefly she wondered at the intention of the gesture, and about what it might symbolize if she were to accept and consume it — especially with Sinclair so close nearby.

She stole a glance in his direction just in time to catch him settling himself against an outer boulder of the den, his black fur absorbing the warmth of the strengthening sunlight. Mauti's head gave a slight tilt as she noticed, with only a little bit of surprise, that he, too, bore signs of a recent encounter with the river. Droplets still glistened on his fur, a testament to the amount of effort he'd apparently gone through to secure the creature.

And for what felt like hours but was probably only a couple of minutes, she simply stared at him, her mind blank except for the act of taking him, his appearance, his presence, in.

Then, she turned her head to cast her gaze back out over the river, its gray, curling surface mingling with the honeyed tones of the morning sun. Inwardly she considered how she should react to the situation, whether succumbing to her hunger had enough of a sway over her desire to remain self-reliant. And despite there being no signs of blood on the corpse beside her, there still existed the wafting scent of iron on the air.

Amidst the silence, the distant call of the raven echoed, and abruptly, Mauti made a decision. Within one graceful movement, she was on her paws and making her way towards Sinclair. The muskrat swung gently from between her teeth, the breeze carrying the rustle of leaves along the snow's surface where she walked.

With each step, her determination solidified. It took more than a few strides to reach him, but when she got there, she let the muskrat drop unceremoniously into the snow at his paws, her gaze alight with a subtle challenge.

Sitting now, her ice-encrusted toes splaying into the snow beneath her, Mauti spoke, her voice betraying a mix of vulnerability and defiance. "You know," she began, her brow furrowing with a hidden frustration. "You remind me of someone."

"Someone that I'm unsure if I should be trying to forget."

The storm had finally cleared. Truth be told, he hadn't meant to stray from Mauti for three whole days, considering her self-described difficulties with hunting. Though she'd survived thus far, Magnus was happy to put his ass on the line to throw a few extra meals her way; the least he could offer for the occasional companionship they provided each other. The spider liked her space, and Magnus offered it to her freely. He wasn't clingy, despite his driving, seething need to have others around him. But after such a winter storm, and a couple days of absence, he knew it was only courteous and decent to pop by. No prey swung in his jaws. The only thing he'd been tracking recently was the black wolf, but his pawsteps still breezed over the ground in a cheerful trot.

Sin heard her approach, but kept his eyes shut, letting her move without his eyes constantly on her. That was until he heard her stop right in front of him and heard the thud of something being dropped. His eyes popped open and he was momentarily taken aback at the site of the muskrat, untouched, laying by him. Hurt flicked through him that she had returned the meal to him. He had not hunted for her with any ulterior motives other than to repay her for the kindness of the previous night. He was getting to his feet when she finally spoke and as he processed her words he took a few steps back from her before sitting and leveling his gaze right on hers.

"You remind me of someone. Someone I am not sure I should be trying to forget" Her words echoed around his mind, not sure what he should make of them. He could take those words to mean two different things. Either she was giving the muskrat back because she thought he was trying to make a move or claim on her and was telling him in a round about way that she wasn't interested in him or his food because of this other wolf she wanted to remember. Orit was her way of opening up, but why would she return the food then?

Keeping his eyes locked on her mismatched eyes, eyes he noticed that shined liked gems in the early morning light and, if he wasn't mistaken, held some sort of challenge for him, though what she would be challenging him for he had no idea. How he answered her unspoken question would probably determine if he was going to be sent packing or allowed to stay, at least for one more night. Cocking his head, ears and tail twitching, Sin let the soft words rumble from his chest.

"And who are you trying to forget, or not forget, little one? Are they the reason I see the wall up in your eyes?" He stood and slowly closed the distance between them, watching her for any sign that she did not welcome his closeness, even though she is the one that approached him this time. Only breaking their locked eyes to lower his head and nudge the food back to her paws. He went hunting for her, and he'd be damned if she tried to give it back. It was hers whether she wanted hi to stay or leave, he would not eat it.

The wind shifted, but he was not able to pick up on the scent of another male approaching them quite yet.

Mauti was careful to keep the surprise out of her gaze as Sinclair initially put a little bit of distance between them. Instead she focused on watching him intently, noting the flicker of thought crossing his features.

Then he spoke, and his question lingered in the space between them as she pondered just how much she should reveal. Should she disclose her past, the memories that haunted her, or should she keep it to herself, afraid of what his reaction might be?

In the end, he deserved to know. At least as much as he needed to understand why she balked at the idea of accepting his gift, no matter how hungry she might have been.

She took a deep breath before speaking, her voice carrying a hint of pain and desperate vulnerability. "He bears a striking resemblance to you," she began, her words slow and deliberate. "Not in appearance, but in actions." Her gaze momentarily shifted to the muskrat lying between them. "A gentleman, like you. Kept me warm, fed me, even brought flowers."

Her voice grew softer, smaller, filled with a touch of sadness as she relived the events that drove her from the previous valley. "Then I found him.. one day, with the same scent on him that I reek of now." The words had become harsher at the end, the sense of betrayal clear in the way she shook her head. She glanced out towards the river as she took another deep breath, trying to calm herself.

But when she continued, her voice still threatened to crack. "But.. I didn't have a heat last winter."

Mauti's eyes locked with Sinclair's then, determination shining through the wetness that started to gather. "So you are correct, he is the reason why I am so guarded." He was the reason why she was there, lost in an unfamiliar land during a storm. He was the reason why she'd thought it was a good idea to share a stupid hole in the ground with an absolute stranger. Why she'd asked the stranger if he believed in fate, because deep down she wondered if she were destined to repeat the same mistakes over and over.

She blinked away the tears before they fell, her resolve taking over and providing her with the strength she needed. Around them, the breeze rustled through the trees, carrying with it the heaviness of unspoken truths and a glimmer of something she recognized, but couldn't quite place.

"I have to protect myself," she said firmly. She was the only one that could.

He sat and let her speak, flicking his ears as she told him what she felt she could. He had a feeling with the way she hedged around her words that she was leaving things out, but at least she was opening up to an extent. And he appreciated and admired her for opening herself to him. Her last words though made him bristle. Not in offense, but in agitation that someone had hurt her so much that she felt she could trust no one, or at last no male. It all made a little more sense though, her guardedness and not wanting to take his food. She probably was afraid that there would be strings attached to his offering and would cause her to open her heart again only for him to shatter it, which he would never do. As they have proven so far he knew how to control himself around a female in heat. He wasn't going to go off and have a romp with every female that was willing. His eyes softened as he looked at her, filling not with pity but compassion and respect.

"Oh, Mauti..." He said on a sigh. "I am so sorry you had your heart broken by another. That young pup knows not what he threw away when he chased after another. But that food at your feet is not a bribe, or something to entice you to me. It is a thanks, and only a thanks for allowing me to share your shelter last night. There are no strings or stipulations attached to it. And not all males are like the one who hurt you or the ones I grew up with. There are decent males who know how to control themselves around a female in your condition, as we have been proving. I will never force my company on you. Should you ask me to leave now I will do so, but be assured I will not go far. I have no doubt you can take care of yourself, but I will not leave you alone with no protection when we know not what other wolves or predators are around and can scent your vulnerable condition. You need not fear me. I offered you friendship last night and I stick by that offer, if friendship is all you care to have from me then that will be all you receive."

Sin stood and shook out his fur, now dry for the most part, thanks to the sun shining down on them and the gentle breeze blowing through the trees. He opened his mouth to say something else when a scent caught his nose. Immediately he moved so his body was between Mauti and whoever was in the vicinity. He scanned the area and could just make out a figure winding their way through he trees. "Little one, get in the shelter. We appear to have company." He was not about to take any risks concerning her safety.
